About us

Norwegian design, made in Oslo one trunk at a time.

A century ago, travellers stood their wardrobe trunks on end, hung their clothes on one side and kept everything else in drawers. Then luggage got lighter, learned to roll, and stopped being somewhere you could keep your clothes. Drobe brings the wardrobe trunk back, starting with the Cabin at 55 x 40 x 23 cm.

Drobe AS was founded in Oslo in 2023. We design every Drobe here, and each one is assembled here by hand. We only build to order, in the colours you choose, so nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for an owner. The Cabin is our first size, and more sizes will follow.

A Drobe is built from a few pure materials, each chosen for one job, and assembled by hand in Oslo. Gold marks the patent-pending rail system that lifts the compartments into three levels.

Built when you order it. Kept going for life.

We do not build stock. Each Drobe is made after it is ordered: one of the six Originals, or your own mix of shell, mid panel and wheel colours. Limited editions will follow, in small numbers. Every Drobe has a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects.

How it opens

One button. Three levels. No unpacking.

  1. 01

    Unlock

    Set your code on the TSA lock in the top handlebar.

  2. 02

    Press

    One press on the handlebar button releases the mechanism.

  3. 03

    Open

    The compartments rise on the patent-pending rail system into three levels.

  4. 04

    Lift the lid

    Open the lid of the top compartment and reach what you need without unpacking.

  5. 05

    Hang

    Pull the hanger rods out from the sides of the handlebar and hang up your coats.

  6. 06

    Close

    Close it back up. Open or closed, Drobe stands on the same floor space.

  1. 1858

    Flat top

    The flat-topped trunk

    Louis Vuitton, a Paris trunk-maker since 1854, introduces flat-topped trunks in Trianon canvas: light, airtight and easy to stack, where trunks had rounded lids.

  2. Late 1870s to 1920

    Low and flat

    The steamer trunk

    Low, flat trunks, about 36 cm tall, made to meet steamship luggage rules. They first appeared in the late 1870s, and most date from 1880 to 1920.

  3. 1910s to early 1950s

    Hangers and drawers

    The wardrobe trunk

    It stood on end, with hangers on one side and drawers on the other. It was very popular from the 1910s to the early 1950s, and the Oshkosh Trunk Company alone held 28 patents between 1912 and 1949.

    Rolling luggage

    Bernard D. Sadow files a US patent for ‘Rolling luggage’ on 16 February 1970. It is granted on 4 April 1972, as US 3,653,474.

    An extendable handle

    The upright two-wheeler

    Airline pilot Robert Plath puts two wheels and an extendable handle on an upright case: the Rollaboard®.

    A shared lock standard

    Locks security can open

    The first Travel Sentry® approved locks, which security staff can open and relock, go on sale on 12 November 2003. Drobe's lock follows this standard.
